Boosting Reading Engagement and Academic Growth Through the Slant System

Teacher Spotlight

This success story comes from a teacher currently using the Slant System in her classroom: Lisa Pancini from Hawthorn School District 73 in Vernon Hills, IL. Lisa shares how Slant System™ has impacted her students’ learning, reading skills, and confidence.

Tracking Student Progress: Academic Growth and Fluency

Lisa tracked measurable growth in students’ literacy skills through the use of the Slant System. One of the most significant improvements has been in students’ ability to engage with instruction and participate actively in structured reading lessons. Over time, more students are reading accurately, completing tasks independently, and demonstrating improved fluency during guided reading and phonics activities.

Task initiation and completion have also improved. At the beginning, several students needed multiple prompts to start work. With consistent use of the structured literacy framework of the Slant System, students now begin tasks more independently and sustain attention for longer periods. These gains have been especially evident during phonics lessons, where students are more willing to participate in word reading, sorting, and partner discussions.

Additionally, students’ reading confidence and participation have grown. Those who were previously hesitant to respond are now actively contributing to lessons, supporting improvements in decoding accuracy, fluency, and comprehension. Progress was informally tracked through observations, reduced teacher prompting, and increased responsiveness during lessons.

Breakthrough Moments: When Concepts “Click”

One standout moment occurred during a phonics lesson on digraphs. A student who had struggled to recognize the “sh” sound finally demonstrated clear understanding. Previously, the student often guessed at words and required multiple prompts to remain engaged.

During this lesson, Lisa reinforced the structured literacy approach of the Slant System, including explicit modeling of blending sounds, decoding, and guided practice. The student began applying these skills independently and read a word with “sh” correctly without prompting. When asked how they knew, the student explained they “saw the sh and remembered the sound.”

This moment highlights the power of structured, systematic instruction: by explicitly teaching reading concepts, guiding repeated practice, and providing consistent opportunities for application, students can make significant literacy gains and achieve mastery of challenging concepts.

Shifts in Student Attitudes Toward Reading

Beyond measurable growth, the Slant System has transformed students’ attitudes toward reading. Students who were previously hesitant or passive during lessons now approach reading with confidence, focus, and a sense of ownership. Reading has shifted from a task to a meaningful, enjoyable activity.

This increased confidence also transfers to other subjects. Students are more likely to initiate tasks independently, stay engaged, and participate in discussions in math, writing, and other areas of the curriculum.

Teacher Reflection: Insights and Takeaways

Implementing the Slant System has reshaped Lisa’s approach to literacy instruction. While phonics instruction was already a priority, the Slant System provided a structured, research-based framework for teaching reading skills systematically. Explicitly modeling concepts, providing guided practice, and offering consistent feedback have created a predictable and effective learning environment, critical for students needing additional support.

Through lessons on digraphs, diphthongs, and other phonics skills, students demonstrate improved attention, participation, and comprehension. Lisa’s biggest takeaway is that structured literacy instruction is as important as the content itself. When students have access to clear, systematic teaching, they build skills, confidence, and the ability to succeed academically.

Confidence Across the Classroom

The Slant System doesn’t just improve reading skills, it fosters positive learning habits and a growth mindset. Students feel supported when attempting new words, sharing ideas, and participating in discussions. These skills carry over into other subjects, resulting in increased focus, independence, and perseverance across the curriculum.

By combining explicit instruction, structured practice, and consistent feedback, the Slant System creates a classroom environment where all students can thrive.
