Description

NEW! The Slant System™ Assessment Toolkit includes over 100 pages of essential assessment materials, each with a detailed assessment manual, plus an accompanying video series to support effective implementation.

This toolkit features three key assessments designed to provide a clear, data-driven understanding of students’ foundational literacy skills. Each overview video walks you through the purpose of each assessment, step-by-step administration instructions, and how to analyze and interpret results to guide instruction

  • The Survey of Phonological Awareness Skills – This assessment identifies a student’s ability to hear, distinguish, and manipulate sounds in spoken language. It includes 12 key skills, progressing from the syllable level to the phoneme level (individual sounds).

These skills are critical foundations for reading and spelling success.

  • The Phonics Survey – The Phonics Survey is used to assess students’ decoding skills and determine their mastery of specific sound-spelling patterns. It includes:

    • Letter-Sound Foundations: Assessment of letter names and letter sounds

    • Seven Levels of Word Lists and Error Analysis: Each level is aligned to the 7 Stages of the Slant System™ Teaching Sequence

Each level of the survey includes three parallel forms, allowing for multiple administrations throughout the year to monitor progress over time.

  • The Spelling Survey – The Spelling Survey is designed to evaluate students’ encoding abilities – their capacity to hear sounds in spoken words and represent them accurately in writing. This assessment helps determine how well students can apply sound-spelling patterns when spelling words, which is a critical skill for both writing and reading development.

The survey includes seven levels with error analysis, each aligned to the 7 Stages of the Slant System™ Teaching Sequence. These levels reflect the progression of instruction from simple to more complex spelling patterns.

Each level focuses on specific sound-spelling correspondences and common spelling rules, allowing teachers to:

    • Identify which patterns students have mastered

    • Pinpoint specific areas of difficulty

    • Group students for targeted instruction

    • Monitor progress over time

By analyzing students’ spelling attempts and errors, educators can gain valuable insight into each student’s understanding of phoneme-grapheme relationships and orthographic knowledge.

More detailed guidance on administration and scoring can be found in the manual section of each assessment within the toolkit.  This assessment is directly aligned with the Slant System™ Teaching Sequence, but could be used by any teacher looking for assessments to use with students.
